Students who have engaged with the lessons on this site will be aware of the troubled legacy of the 1641 depositions. This final lesson helps students to understand how that legacy is still relevant today. The students are given the speeches made by President Mary McAleese and Rev. Ian Paisley, Lord Bannside, at the launch of the digitised 1641 depositions in October 2010. By reading these two documents ‘like historians’ students should be able to discern subtle differences in the way the two speakers interpret the evidence provided by the 1641 depositions. Students are asked to consider the central historical question ‘why does the 1641 rebellion have such a troubled legacy?’
Classroom set up: designed for a 40 minute class, group work, data projector needed to watch videos, no student computers needed.
