Like the beginning of most rebellions in Ireland, the outbreak of the 1641 rebellion did not run smoothly. In this activity we consider whether all historical sources are equally trustworthy. How might the reliability of a historical document be affected by the circumstances under which it was created? The central historical question asks ‘what was the main motivation of the rebels at the outbreak of the 1641 rebellion?’ In order to answer it students must grapple with several conflicting accounts.
Classroom set up: designed for a 40 minute class, group work, data projector needed to watch videos, no student computers needed.
