The examination of Donogh mc Cafferye taken before vs Sir Sa: Mayart knight &c & Hugh Cressye esquire &c this 1 of Nou: 1641. william Bell a warder of the Castle beinge sworne to interprete trulye.
<A> Who beinge examined saith that he was borne in Knocknenan in the County of ffermanagh nere Sir william Coles & that he is of the age of 24 yeares or therabouts & hath alwayes lived ther til the last yeare he serued in the North of Ireland vnder Capt: Maguire the Lord of Maguires brother, & that he hath no certaine dwellinge but serued vp & downe to get his liuinge sometimes with Donagh Maguire & sometimes with other men, & that about 14 dayes since he heard that ther were soldiers goinge for Spayne wher vpon he heareing of this newes at masse on last Sunday was fortnight at Mahernecrussy in the County of ffermanagh published by Patrick Ocurrekan the preist he came the same sunday to Sollagh 10 miles from Mahernecrussye only with one two yonge men in his company called Redman mc Cafferye & Phelim mc Cafferye & that at Sollagh they lay at the house of Phelim reagh mc Manus wher ther was no company but them of his owne household; & the next day beinge Munday they 3 only came si about sixteene miles to the Brenye wher they lay at a mans house whom they know not but had ther victualls giuen them for nothinge. & the next day beinge tuseday they came about sixeteene miles more to Tulleunshy wher they 3 lay at <B> one of the mc Kennaes wher ther was none but the famely of the household that this examinant knoweth, & vpon Wedensday they 3 3 came within 2 miles of the Nauan to Liscartan wher they lay at one Katherin Knockes har house wher the house was ful of people in a chamber but he knew none of them but heard that the name of one of them was Tirlogh oge mc Reagh. & vpon thursday they 3 only came within 6 miles of Dublin but the name of the towne he knoweth not & lay at the house of one whose name was Relye wher this examinant spent 2 d. for his supper And vpon friday they al 3 came to Dublin where they mett with one Cahir mc Cafferye who shewed them a lodginge without the gates towards the Colledge to which place he can goe agane but knoweth not the mans name wher they lay: & the next day beinge saterday they heard that a Captayne was Killed in the towne whervpon this examinant sought to get in at the gates of Dublin & to goe out the other way he came first in at but was stayed by the porters but the other two Redman & Phelim got in at the gates & what became of them after <C> he knoweth not, nor doth he knowe what became of Cahir whom by chance he only met & neuer knew him after but he was acquain t ed with the other two & after he had shewed them the lodginge departed from them. He further saith that he had no busines to Dublin but to goe as a soldier into Spayne neyther doth ke knowe what busines Phelim or Redman had to come to towne but to goe as soldiers into Spayne but none of them had any Captayne to whome they shold repayre when they came hether. he also saith that because he cold not get in at the gates & wantinge victualls he went ouer the water vpon a carr intendinge to goe home & vpon the grene of Dublin on this side the water he met with Daniel mcguire whom he neuer saw before who said he was lokeing to be a soldier for Spayne but because the gates were shutt & they heard of no captaynes they went back as farr as within a mile of Bolanye in the County of Meath to the house of one Richard ffleminge where

<D> vpon sunday last was seuennight they were taken in the night by the Lord of Slane who because they had no passe sent them both to Dublin he also saith that neuer any did speake to him or any wayes sollicite him to come to Dublin but as he hath formerly in this examination set forth
