The Examination of James Talbott taken the xviith day of May 1642 Before mee Sir Robert Meredith knight Chancellor of his Maiesties Court of Exchequer & one of his Maiesties Justices of the peace for the County of Dublin By direction of the right honnorable the Lords Justices & Councell.
Who beeing sworne & Examined saith that about the Month of September last hee this Examinant rode in the Companie of Sir Luke ffitz Gerrald Luke Netterfeild Sir Robert Talbott Barronet and James Netterfeild late of Tobber from the Countie of Kildare Towne of Gormanston in the Countie of Kildare vnto Castle Talbott the house of the said Sir Robert Talbott and in theire said Journey hee this Examinant ouerheard the said Sir Luke ffitz Gerrald discourse of the discontents betweene the king & Parliament in England Wherevpon the said Sir Luke spake vnto the said Companie in the heareing of this Examinant these wordes following They say (by God) that before Christmas daie there will bee twelue thousand men in Armes in the North of Ireland And this Examinant att the same tyme likewise heard the said Sir Luke protest with an oath that hee had seene with his owne Eyes the seale and hand vnto itt And this Examinant further saith that the said Sir Luke ffitz-Gerrald Luke Netterfeild James Netterfeild and Sir John Netterfeild went from the said house of Sir Robert Talbotts vnto the Cyttie of Kilkenny hee the said

Sir Robert going with them the aforesaid gentlemen vnto the house of one Mr Peirce Butler sonne and heire apparent vnto Sir Edward Butler knight where the said Sir Robert Talbott remained with them for about ffoure daies and then returned And the rest of the gentlemen aforenamed went vnto the Cyttie of Killkennie And about a fortnight after all of them (excepting Sir Luke ffitzGerrald who went vnto the Countesse of Kildares house) came againe vnto his the said Sir Robert Talbotts house where they lodged one night and soone after hee the said Sir Robert Talbott this Examinant and one Mr Darnell beeing in discourse of the present tranquillitie of this Kingdome The said Sir Robert therevpon said I cannot tell what to think thereof ffor Sir Luke ffitz-Gerrald tells mee that before Christmas daie next there will bee 12000 men in Armes in the North of Ireland Wherevpon hee this Examinant and the said Mr Darnell speakeing something of the vnlikelynes thereof hee the said Sir Robert replied I know not what to saie But Sir Luke ffitz Gerrald swore vnto mee that hee saw the kings Comission vnder his hand & seale granted vnto them to that purpose And this Examinant further saith that hee was moued by Sir Robert Talbott to take his the said Sir Roberts owne horse and Pistolls and to goe shew himselfe att the meeteing vpon the hill of Bolton where all the Irish Armie were to meete and encounter the

Kings Armie & whether hee should bee attended by two of the said Sir Roberts men And the said Sir Robert then likewise told him this Examinant that in case that hee would accordinglie performe that aduice hee the said Sir Robert would vndertake to gaine this Examinant the command of a Companie amongst the Irish Armie
