The Examinacion: of Steeuen Lynch fz Andrew of Gallway Merchant
Who saith that he hath for fiue or Six yeeres <A> liued in the Isles of Arran vntill the Island was Possess’t by the State’s fforces when he withdrew himself from thence in regard he was Excepted in the Articles made with Gallway at the Surrender, as being an actor in the Surprizall of Capt: Clarkes Shipp in which he was Employed by the Towne & in particuler spake to & incited by Capt: Tully & Walter oge Martin, (& saith moreouer that James oge Lynch fz Steeuen Spake to the boateman to goe in the seruice and promised them Twenty pound’s as a reward as he was Informed by < [

they could accomplish it, but when they were debateing to take the same by force in case they were resisted it was not opposed by the said Marcus, and haueing resolued the Course they would take; Juding it ffeazible in regard of the <C> dealeing or tradeing they had with the said shipp and take haueing the Consent of Dominick Keruan Merchant of the said shipp, and because the forecastle & Steereage were Barr’d, the next Morning the said Domminick Keruan, Walter Martin, Tho: Martin Andrew Lynch & this Examinant with the said boatemen went on boord the said shipp with sword’s skeynes and Pistoll’s, and they pretending to Come to receiue Salt in theire boat’s were not opposed by any in the said shipp but freely admitted on boord, and when <D> they came on Boord the said Dominick Keruan being Cape=Merchant, desired to goe into the Cabbin [

ran to the Gunnroome to possess themselues of that, where there was three of the Seamen thinking to defend the roome, thrust out a rapier betweene the Creuis of the boords whereby his Examinant <f> was like to haue bin Killed, when he with the said Dom <Walter Martin> & Andrew Linch were pulling at the doore to breake it open, which when they had accomplished they seized vppon the men & put them in theire sent them into the Towne with the rest that were wounded that they might be Cured, afterward’s the shipp was brought to the Towne and what they had done was made an act of the Towne, and Sir Valentin Blake came on Boord to take possession of the Guns in her.
further saith that Walter Blake fz was one of the said boatemen Anthrew Andrew told him he <g> heard the said James Lynch offerr the said boteman the said Twenty pound for theire paines.
And further being exammined Concerneing theire goeing one Boord & who Encouraged them thereto they being but fiue in Number besid’s Watermen saith that a greater Number went the day before on boord with an Intention to surprize the shipp <k> but failed therein which was the occasion of the said Consultacion of the rest with this Examinant as abouesaid and that as he remembreth John Martin fz Jeffry Capt: James Lynch, Capt: Tully, the Capt: of the young men & the abouemencioned Walter Martin were there in the said former Attempt; and before this Examinant with <J> the rest came on shore the Towne Court was Called and the Surprizall of the shipp with what had bin done therein was made [
