The Examination of Captain Jacob Knoweles taken b before vs this of 1653
Whoe being duly sworne & Examened sayth that when Captain drew was at Strangford with A Littell frigatt a littell before the fight at Lisnegaruye Maior Archebald warlow and Lieutenant william Jonson had A designe to take the sayd frigatt and the said Captain, as this deponant was then tould wherof the deponant acqvented Captain drew which made him to take the friga{tt} <A> ffrom the shore side ffarther of to the into the Roode And Least the said partis should make vse of Any the Bootes that La{y} one the shore and therewith attempt to take the said friga{tt} therefore this deponant went A shore with the Cog bote to bulge the said Bootes wheilst hee this deponant was soe doeing hee hard some of that partie say Lieutenant Capt william Jonson a partye of Musketteers which then came towards the place where this Examinant was breakeing of the boats; (who were commaunded & lead on by Lieutenant William Johnson as this Examinant was tould by Lieutenant John Johnson) say here are the Rogues <B> here is the Roague, Captain Knowles, wherevpon presently order was giuen to fire at this deponentt which [ f ] made this Examinant to make all the hast hee Could to geet Aboorde in all which time the Musketteeres ffired at this deponent and being disapointed of his Interprise the Lieutenant william Jonson went to John ffishers house in Strangford and asked of him what Cowes this deponant had whoe was tould that this deponent had noe Cowes of his owne but onely some Cowes hee hired where vppon the said Lieutenant william Johnson said he would ffire this deponant houses which Caused this deponants wife to rune all Night with her Child in her Armes [ by ] ffrom Downe to shunn the said Jonson ffurye and durst not returne to her house, tell after the fight of Lisnegaruye wherein the said Lieutenant william Jonson was with som soulders before which Revolt, of the said Lieutenant Jonson did Liue in his one house in Quiet vnder the [ ] States; protection and was fformerly in the States paye As a Lieutenant in Sir James Mungomeryes Regiment
