The deposition of dudley Colley of Carbrie Esquire taken before vs A the xxiijth day of ffebr 1653 .
<A> Who beinge duly sworne and examined saith, That one or about the laste of Aprill 1642 Collonel Lewes Moore came with a partie of horse and footte beinge in number as this deponentt Conceiueth 300 men or thearabouts neere vnto Castle Carbrie in the County of Kildare, where this deponent and his Mother the Lady Colley then liued, And sent one Richerd Locke k one of his horsemen to demaunde the possession of the said Castle, which was refused by this deponent and his said Mother although they were nott well able to defend the same, And vppon there said refusall Collonel Lewes Moore sent backe againe the said Locke, with another whome this deponent doth not remember, (as the said Locke alleadged) That oneless this deponent and his Mother would immediately deliuer vpp the said Castle that hee would loose all the men hee had there, but that hee would gaine the place, whearevppon this deponent <B> and his said Mother still refused the Giueinge vpp of the Castle vnto him, vppon which refusall, the said Collonel Moore wentt himselfe with what horse hee had to a passe called Cassevanie, to keepe the said passe that the Garison of Edenderrie should nott come to relieue this deponent, his said Mother or Castle, and immediatly the footte soldiers was leade downe by Capten fitz Gerald oneWalshe Lt to the said Collonel Moores footte Company Christopher Plunckett and Lawrence Roein priests and seuerall others, who surrunded the said Castle and findeinge but smale oposition attemptted the Grates theareof, and brocke downe the wale about the hindges theareof, which this deponent and such as were with him perceiueinge, and beinge nott able to withstand them any longer, hee Called vnto the said officers for the said Collonel Moore and that they would deliuer vpp themselues vnto him for Quartter, The said officers replied that what power

power Collonel Moore had, hee gaue itt vnto them, and that they would giue Quartter and performe itt [

saith that hee was prisoner with the said Collonell Moore in Ballinaa a longe time after, and that hee saw the Grates of the said Castle of Carbrie and most of all the goods and plate brought to Ballinaa vnto the said Collonell Moore, who had and enjoyed much thereof, And this <E> deponent further saithe, That a while after the burninge and pilladginge of the said Castle, and that they were somewhat settled, This deponent spoke to the said Collonel Moore and toulde him, that itt was verie harde that soe many poore people as was killed in his said Castle should haue suffered in that kinde beinge noe soldiers or any waies knoweinge how to vse Armes, Whearevnto the said Collonell Moore replied that if all that beene in the Castle had been soe vsed hee would haue Justified itt, pretendinge that they broke what Quarter was graunted vnto them, And this deponent remained prisoner with the said Collonel Moore in Ballinaa aforesaid and other places for nine Monthes or theare aboutts and knoweth what hee hath deposed to bee true.
