<a> The Examinacion of Mr John Browne of the Isles of Arran concerning the Murther of Peter Ward of Trumrogh in the County of Clare
Who being duely sworne & Examined saith that about the begining of May 1642 a party came out of Connarra in Errconaught to his house he then dwelling in Inisher Island where the said party <A> abode two dayes and was Comaunded by Edmund ô fflagherty of Runuile Esquire brother to Murrogh ny Mart, and Hugh ô fflagherty his brother, & the rest of the party being about one hundred men, the most of which number were of the sept of Clan mc enry and further saith that there were then in theire compnay Brien oge Mason, Dermott mc William boateman Murrogh mc Edmund then a boy of Aran Island Edm: mc Marragh, fagoart ô fflagherty, Vrrowne ô fflagherty, Murragh ô fflagherty of Ballynihinch barrony, and seuerall others whome he knoweth by sight but not by name, sawe three of the said deponents Examinants seruants whom together with himself & his boate, they compelled allong with them from the said Island of Inisher to Thomond, being Salomon ffeolan, Seraulagh ffeolan the other mans name he remembreth not they all went together to Trumrogh aforesaid & besiedged, the Castle about three dayes, which at last was to be surrendered to them vppon quarter of theire liues <B> promised by the said Edm: ô fflagherty vppon the surrender of

<C> surrender of the Castle to him, but the said Peter, his wife and son tarrying in the Castle about 24 howres longer then the rest being Nyne that came forth endeauouring to deffend the same the son came forth who was slayne by them and the next morning about Nyne or Tenn of the Clock the said party fell on & tooke the Castle and slew the said Peter Ward and his wife and when they had plundered the house they returned that night with the said party in fiue boates to Inisher & tarryed there all night, and the next day went to Straw Island and diuided theire plunder and went thence to Errconaught and further being Examined saith that he continued with them dureing the siedge and when the Castle was taken he went into the same himself and that they loaded this Examinants boate with the goods & plunder of the said Castle <D> and that the said Edmund ô fflagherty Offered this Examinant a share but he refused to accept of any and further saith that he did not goe to complaine of the said ffact to any Justice of peace of person or Authority and further this Examinat saith not
