The Examinacion of Arthur Stoughton of the Quiyle in the County of Downe Esquire taken at Carrickfergus the 9th of June 1653 in behalf of the Comon Wealth
Who being duely sworne & examined sayth That at the begining of the Rebellion at such tyme as the Rebells came to the towne of <A> Downepatrick this examinat liveing within a mile of the said towne receiued a letter from Patrick mc Cartan of Loghin Iland Esquire the substance wherof was, an intimacion vnto this Examinat that all his frends within the barony of Lecale, & in particular the house of Downe, meaning therby the lord Cromwells house, have submitted themselues vnto them, & that if he this examinat would submit to them he should have as good, or better quarter then his said frends had gotten, to which this Examinat hav eing returned haveing returned a denyall in writeing, he heard noe more from the said mc Cartan, And this Examinat further sayth that about the same tyme this Examinat receiued notice from Mr Robert Kinorston who then liued in Saul neere this Examinats house that the said Patrick mc Cartan had written to him likewise to the same purpose for the yeilding of his Castle And this Examinat further sayth not
